Hornsea Projects

Learn more about four offshore wind farm sites off the UK's East Coast.

Welcome to the Hornsea Projects

The Hornsea Projects are four record-breaking offshore wind farms which Ørsted are operating, constructing and developing off the East Coast in the North Sea. These wind farms are a new generation of offshore power stations; further from the coastline than ever before, and at a scale which is a step-change in size from current wind farms.

Discover more about the Hornsea offshore wind farm projects below.

In 2020, Hornsea 1 became commercially operational and is now the largest offshore wind farm in the world! It is double the size of the previous record holder, Walney Extension and can power well over one million UK homes.

Hornsea 2, entered operation on the 31 August 2022 and was built at the lowest ever contract price for offshore wind in the UK. It surpassed Hornsea One as the world’s biggest offshore wind farm, powering well over 1.4 million UK homes.

We are proposing to develop two more offshore wind farms, adjacent to these projects, and even bigger still!

Hornsea 3 was granted a Development Consents Order (DCO) in December 2020 by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Once operational, it will be capable of generating enough power to meet the average daily needs of well over 2 million homes. We are also exploring the potential to develop a fourth project, Hornsea 4, which is currently in the
pre-application phase.

Orsted supporting local communities

Supporting local communities

Ørsted’s East Coast Community Benefit Funds have been established to ensure local communities directly benefit from our wind farms along the Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the North Norfolk coasts. Each year, around £390,000 will be made available to support a wide range of community & environmental projects. An additional £75,000 is ring-fenced for a ‘Skills Fund’, helping to deliver Science, Engineering and Maths (STEM) related education that will enhance skills and deliver employment opportunities across the region.

Helping to develop a competitive UK supply chain

We are committed to supporting the development of a competitive UK supply chain that can assist in the construction and operation of our wind farms both in the UK and in a growing number of markets around the world. Ørsted is playing a leading role in the Offshore Wind Sector Deal , which aims to deploy up to 30GW offshore wind by 2030, triple jobs in the sector to 27,000, and has set an ambition of increasing exports fivefold to £2.6bn per annum.

For over 10 years, Ørsted has worked closely with UK companies to deliver significant multi-billion pound infrastructure projects. Our close collaboration with suppliers has helped to revive old facilities, create record-breaking orders and safeguard jobs up and down the country, as well as export opportunities for our projects overseas. This has helped to transform coastal communities through business investment, and employment opportunities, contributing to a more productive, competitive and export orientated supply chain.

We will continue to work closely with UK suppliers both directly and through our major contractors to support the development of a competitive UK supply chain. Find out more about our existing supply chain and how to become part of future projects in this section
